Facebook

I usually try to keep this blog dedicated to Gavin, our other boys and thoughts on being a mother to them. But, today I'm here to write about something that I just don't understand. I'm here to talk about this crazy thing called Facebook. I am so confused about this thing that has overtaken my inbox. Are any of you able to help me with my confusion?

This past week alone, I've been sent about 20 requests to join other people's facebook page. The email says that the person is requesting to be my friend. I don't get this! I thought that we already were friends! Why do I have to click on the link to affirm this friendship?! What is the purpose of Facebook?! I just don't get it! It seems so 'high school' to me.

I usually just make fun of Facebook, but now I'm starting to feel peer pressure to build a site of my own! (Peer pressure...I told you that I thought it was just like high school!) Will someone PLEASE explain to me what all the hype is about this phenomenon?! Is there a good reason to join Facebook? Are people actually benefitting from having a site of their own? Like I said, I just don't get it! Help me to understand this craziness!

I refuse to build a site of my own, unless there is a good reason for it. Often times, in the past, I thought doing a blog was crazy too. I only started this blog to update family and friends on Gavin when he was so sick and in the hospital all of the time. Now I'm glad that I did this, because I have met so many WONDERFUL friends who have been SO SUPPORTIVE to me! I know that I would not have met so many fantastic Mommas, who are caring for their inspirational children, if not for this site. Blogging shares feelings, tips, support and an outlet for bad days. What does Facebook do for you? I've been to a few sites and I am not certain of the reason behind it all. Please help! What is the point? I don't want to be rude and not accept these friendships, but I just don't understand the logic behind it all.

If any of you can give me a great reason why I should jump on the band wagon, then I may just let myself be pulled into all this peer pressure. But, if you can't, then I'm going to just focus on the faces that God has blessed me with, like this adorable one and the faces of his big brothers!

Please enlighten me. Thanks for your help!

The ONLY reason I am on Facebook is so I can re-connect with old college and high school friends. I grew up in a really small town, graduated from a class of 63 people. I moved away and lost touch with a lot of them. Facebook is a way to find those old people and see what they are doing now.

I really can be pretty juvenile at times. I don't play any of the games or take the quizzes, that stuff is just not for me. I just use it to keep up with people that I lost touch with, people that I don't get an opportunity to see in real life because they live across the country. I am able to keep people who may not read my blog informed of what is going on with us and what we need prayers for. And I can pray for them too. Plus, the off-topic tracheostomy message forum is on Facebook, so I also use it for that.

Having said that, don't let anyone pressure you to join. If it's not for you, then it's not for you.

I am soooooooo with you on this! I just joined this weekend. The only reason I joined was so that I could keep up with my cousins, who live all over. Now I am getting all of these friend requests from people that I couldn't STAND in high school (and the feeling was mutual most times). As soon as I wrote about "what has been going on in my life the last 5 years - i.e. Christopher" ALL of these people deleted me as a friend. I guess complaining about not being able to afford spa treatments because of the economy is all of the strife they can handle! (rolling my eyes here). I don't think we're missing anything. :)

Gavin is looking good!

Hugs!

I am not good with the peer pressure. I joined because people kept asking me to. Although I did find a friend from high school. But I don't get it either and I never go there unless someone sends me a message on there.

You've read my stuff about FB--most of it tongue-in-cheek, but partially serious. I know a lot of people enjoy it for keeping in touch with family and friends. Like anything, it can be used for good, or it can be abused. I can see where it could be fun to stay in touch, but I just don't have the time to keep up with both a blog and a FB. You do keep people so well informed about Gavin and your family on your blog, it would seem like you'd be doing double duty!

Alicia,
I've been an underground Gavin fan for years, but never commented. . . but I'll weigh in the the FB thing. First--I love the "Big Guy" picture :)
You can accept FB friends and have a FB account w/o putting any effort into it. there isnt anything to build really unless you want to upload photos and with your blog I wouldnt do the pics again. I rarely update my status (tell people what I'm doing currently) but I read what my FB friends are doing . . . you can put in what you want, but it doesnt require time, but it can be addicting to look for people or check out their pics and stuff. I would get it so that when jacob wants one, you can be his FB friend and keep tabs on his FB friends. I would set it so that you dont get email updates b/c that is the most annoying part to me.
if you want to know more we'll most likely be at softball Tues. no matter what, it is not worth stressing a/t it is supposed to be fun not work, so dont feel pressured :)

I don't have a FB account, and I feel like one of the last few on Earth who don't! LOL Even my husband has one, although it's for work.

I love the Big Guy picture!

Well, girl, i'm on FB. It is nothing particularly special to me except that I've been able to reconnect with some good friends who moved away. I do play ONE game called Farmtown and it is something that helps me de-stress. I don't do the quizzes and I don't particularly enjoy when people find me that I don't care for them to find me...but I just don't add them. I got sucked in....but it has been a way for me to reconnect...lol.

LOVE the pic of Gavin.

I love facebook. I've connected with friends from HS, college, and churches I've attended. I'm also addicted to one of the games. It's a great escape, and a lot of fun. I was against it at first, but now I love it.

I myself don't have a Facebook account and am not a fan! I couldn't agree with you more. I talk/email/text with those that are important to me. Other than that don't need the pressure of making a Facebook page to connect with people. You are way more popular than me though...I've only had a request or two : ) Not as hard to say no. You do such great work with this blog. No need to spend time on Facebook when you can spend your days with the boys and even a toad or two. No facebook can compare to the gifts you have : )

I don't judge those that have a Facebook account. Just not for me.

Love,
Julie
